Green Tea Beverage: A Top Longevity Food

3/16/2013

In his new book, Secrets of Longevity Cookbook, Dr. Maoshing Ni listed green tea as one of the top ten foods for health and longevity. During his twenty-five years of studying centenarians, he found that the same ten foods kept recurring again and again in the diets of long-living individuals, and green tea definitely tops the charts in the beverage category.

Green tea smoothies are a great delicious and nutritious option when you don't have time to sit down to a good breakfast.

Experiment by mixing in fruit like banana, mango, apricot or pineapple. Also try using almond or soy milk.

Here are some simple and nutritious recipes from one of my favorites matcha sites.

Genmaimatcha Tea from American Tea Room

Whereas Genmaicha is a low-caffeine alternative to other Japanese greens, Genmaimatcha cranks up the caffeine (and the antioxidants and flavor) with the addition of one of our favorite teas: Matcha. The jade-green, matcha-covered leaves in Genmaimatcha have a sweet, grainy aroma with an intense green freshness. They brew into a rich, deep, nearly opaque chartreuse green liquor with a sweet, toasty flavors of roasted almonds and grains, an oceanic whiff of fatty salmon and a pure, strong grassy, vegetal note. What follows is a tingly aftertaste in which toasty rice notes outlast any fading astringency. The overall effect is assertively bittersweet, cementing this tea’s spot as a favorite wake-up tea. Pair with breakfast, brunch or grilled fish.

Matcha Green Tea Ice Cream

from eBook of Sweet and Savory Recipes, by Minnie Jardine

The quintessential matcha recipe. Dreamy.
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/3 cup raw evaporated cane sugar
  • Pinch sea salt
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 3 tablespoons sifted Matcha powder blended with 1/8 cup water to form a smooth paste
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
Scald milk mixture over low heat, stirring constantly to dissolve the sugar, then remove from the heat. In a small mixing bowl whisk the three egg yolks lightly.

Slowly pour 1/4 of hot milk into egg yolks, whisking as you go to temper them, then add the yolk mixture back into the remaining hot milk. Cook, stirring constantly, over low heat until it thickens a bit. Remove from heat and pour back into mixing bowl.

Combine the matcha paste, cream and vanilla and add to the milk mixture. Whisk to blend and cool, then cover tightly and chill thoroughly. Follow the directions for your own ice cream maker.

    About me

Hello, I’m Steve. I’m 55, live in Dayton, Ohio and I have a passion for everything green tea. I love learning and expanding my knowledge of green tea and its health benefits, and then sharing it with others. I have varied and diverse interests that include the love of golf, basketball, wine, and music (alternative and smooth jazz).  I’m married to the most wonderful woman in the world and have three grown children (all girls).

I have always been a tea drinker as I never acquired the taste for coffee like everyone else around me. But my love for green tea really started when I was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia or CLL.  CLL is the most common type of leukemia. Most people are diagnosed without symptoms as the result of a routine blood test that returns a high white blood cell count, as was in my case. I’m still in the early stages in what is called “Watch and Wait” mode, and my goal is to stay in this stage and never have to be treated!

I used to consume a lot of carbonated beverages. This was not good from a nutrition standpoint, as nutrients play a key role in taking care of my CLL. Over time I have learned about the connection between what we consume and how it contributes to our overall health.

My tea preferences are still evolving. I really like teas, both hot and iced. I’m still learning about loose teas and how to brew them. My favorite drink when I’m out and about is a Matcha tea latte from Starbucks.
